COCOA FARMERS IN LEKIE DIVISION SMILE
Farmers of
cocoa in Lekie Division of Cameroon`s Centre Region have just been given a
bonus. Henceforth, for each kilo of cocoa beans they sell, they are to get a subsidy
of CFA50 Franc.
This boost
is thanks to a 4-year certification the farmers got from UTZ. The certification
from UTZ is offered in partnership with Theobroma BV which is a Dutch trader.
It is also part of an offer by the Dutch government to buy 100 per cent
certified sustainable cocoa from 2025.
SPORE
magazine, the bi-monthly publication of the Technical Centre for Agriculture
and Rural Cooperation (CTA) based in the Netherlands, carries this news item.
According to
the magazine, “During the process, growers are trained in the best pre-and
postharvest practices, careful use of chemical pesticides and pest and disease
control. Each year they are also assessed on the effective implementation of
the standards, use of child labour in the plantations and
respect of workers’ rights and duties”.
