REACTION TO THE POSSIBLE SACKING OF PRIME MINISTER YANG (Part 3 of 3)
Doling out money has done nothing but emasculate us
poor Cameroonians to the point where we worship corrupt individuals for
donating a small fraction of our own money to us through a bag of rice. The
biggest disgrace of all is the case of respected Traditional Leaders who
prostrate to meet the Prime Minister – with the hope of receiving an envelope.
They have become the laughing stock of the people, whereas in other countries
Traditional Leaders are well respected and put on state salaries to avoid them
being national pests. Thanks to Achidi Achu, a very corrupt practice has been
institutionalized. I cannot remember this happening in the days of Sadou Hayatou.
5. Comparison to Canada
Although it
might be unfair to compare Cameroon to Canada, we need to worry about those who
come to meetings two hours late and blame it on ‘African time’. Is it not time
we start looking at how well others have been able to deliver in their
countries? When asked why he does not step down for others in his party, Fru
Ndi`s response has been ‘Why don’t you ask Biya to step down first.” We have
the tendency to compare with the worst and pride ourselves on ‘being better’. Due
to Yang’s leadership and professionalism in Canada, we now have Cameroonians
travelling up to Canada from the US to apply for passports because the embassy
there is more efficient than that in Washington.
I would like to say if Yang is removed today, it is good riddance. He belongs to the past. Secondly, apart from the Achidi Achu philosophy, the Primature of Cameroon serves no real purpose. Thirdly perhaps there are some lessons to learn from Yang’s approach to governance. And finally I acknowledge that I may be singing an incongruous note concerning the realities of Cameroon. At least we can both draw consolation from the fact that out here, there are people who take The `Tikum Mbah Azonga Blog` seriously.
