SOME GRIEVANCES FOR
PAUL BIYA IN BUEA
Recently, I
boarded a taxi in Buea. When I got off, I handed the driver a 2000 franc note
which he took. While searching his pockets he complained that he might not have
a thousand francs to give me, the reason being that there was a shortage of
1000 franc notes in circulation.
“When Pa
Paul comes, this is what we taxi drivers are planning to tell him!” he said.
“Who is Pa
Paul?” I asked
“Paul Biya,
of course”, he answered.
Another
passenger in the taxi joined in:
“What is a
thousand francs that you want to complain about? We want to stand ahead and
tell him when he comes that the problem of electricity cuts here in Buea has
become not just frustrating but irritating and annoying”
A third passenger
said his own greatest concern was water. “There is an acute shortage of water
here in Buea and people have to go to great lengths of self sacrifice, suffering
and pity to get any water at all”.
