THE ACUTE SHORTAGE OF NAMES IN CHINA

Although those of us who come from countries whose populations are nowhere near one billion may think that names are so widely available that one can pick and choose at random, this is sadly not the case with China which is grappling with a population of one billion and four hundred million inhabitants. Surely, that is an astronomical figure for any single country to have. AWAKE magazine reports that name shortage is currently a big problem in China, especially when it concerns surnames. The paper explains that a national survey carried out in 2006 revealed that about 85 per cent of Chinese people actually share “only 100 surnames”. |
