The title of this book, What
Goes Around, comes from the expression, “what goes around, comes around”,
which means that a person`s actions -
whether good or bad – will often have consequences for that person. The book
contains five short stories which would appeal to any reader but which are
particularly suitable for Form One prose, since from that class, students are
expected to treat a book of prose, a book of drama and a book of poetry. Three
of the stories are taken from the author`s earlier collection of short stories,
The Wooden Bicycle, and the other two
are taken from his later collection of short stories entitled Cup Man.
The collection explores interesting aspects of daily life for
people of all ages and sexes. They cover the home and family, school, money and
business, village life and the market, living things such as the animals around
us which we tend to take for granted; the things that fascinate children with
consequences that are sometimes positive but also sometimes negative. Some of
the stories are lessons for adults and parents in the sense that they prove
that sometimes even parents can learn from children. That is why children are
heroes in a majority of the stories. The narrative is set against the
background of a country that attaches importance to education as a way of
fighting ignorance and underdevelopment.
Students and teachers will find the questions at the end of
each story to be a very useful pedagogic tool.
