The
General Manager of the Upper Nun Valley Development Authority (UNVDA)
headquartered in Ndop, Chin Richard Wirngo, has outlined his vision for the
state-funded rice production corporation.
He
recently revealed that UNVDA aims to facilitate the production of rice by
developing the 15 000n hectares of “marshy land that lies between the West
and North West Regions”. But he pointed out that far from stopping at that target,
the firm would encourage farmers to grow other crops such as maize and
vegetables so that a lot more can be on offer.
The
General Manager, who was speaking to Cameroon
Tribune after the Annual Conference of Central and External Services of the
Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MINADER) for 2014, stated that having
raised allotted surface area on which rice is produced from 2500 hectares to
3000 hectares; UNVDA will now seek to beat that record in the least possible
time. Furthermore, he indicated that from 14 000 to 15 000 tons of
paddy rice produced two years ago, UNVDA had attained 16 000 tons this
year.
He also said the company is currently working towards modernizing the
rice mill in Ndop which has been used for thirty years. This, he explained,
would improve production from more than just 3.5 tons of paddy rice hour to a
much higher figure.
