IS PRIME MINISTER YANG FINISHED? (Part 1 of 2)
A reshuffle is
imminent in Cameroon any time from now. Speculations have been rife about it. And
honestly, if political trends are anything to go by, some credence should be
lent to the conjectures.
After a
country has undergone major events such as the triple elections in Cameroon in
2013 (Senate, Legislative and Municipal), a leader reshuffles his cabinet. Some
ministers are flushed out, others are promoted and yet others are made to swap
places. Also new faces are brought in.
Among those
earmarked as likely to go is current Prime Minister and Head of Government, Philemon.
Why then is Yang tipped to go? One of the reasons is that prior to the twin
Parliamentary Elections, Biya seemed to have downgraded and downsized him. That
is because while during the October 2011 presidential election Biya made him
his National Campaign manager, during the latter elections, he was limited to
campaign manager for the North West Region.
Although nationwide,
the CPDM party (of which Biya is National Chairman and Yang an active member) won more council and parliamentary seats in
the country, in the North West, Yang`s regional constituency, it was different.
The SDF once more, still kept its hegemony there.
In Yang`s home Division of Bui, the story is worse. He
is from Oku sub Division. The parliamentary seat of Oku/Noni was won by the SDF.
That means at home, the prime minister will live ‘under’ an opposition member
of parliament. Worse still is that one
of the two Councils in his parliamentary jurisdiction – Noni – was also taken by
the SDF. Although his own local Council, Oku, was gained by the CPDM that victory
was overshadowed by the fact that the Council constituency of his very beautiful
wife, Linda - Bello in Boyo Division - was won by the SDF.
Overall in
Bui Division, the SDF dominated because it won four of the six Councils there: Jakiri,
Nkum, Kumbo, and Noni. The CPDM won only Mbiame and Oku.
There is not a
domain in which Yang has stamped his image, unlike his predecessors. Achidi
Achu was generous; Musonge was astute and fair; and Inoni made impromptu visits
to some ministries and proved to be very bilingual.
Based
on these results, the prime minister may go. Even so, there are other factors
that work against him. Yes, he has been hard working. But _________________________________
