The government
of the United States is to pump some 25 billion CFA Francs into the Cameroonian
health sector by the year 2015.
The
disclosure was made in Yaounde recently by the American Chargé d`Affaires,
Gregory Thomas, during a ceremony marking his country`s independence day next
July 4.
Eulalia
Amabo Nchang who covered the event for The Post newspaper quoted the official as
saying the focus on health care was part of an initiative aimed at wiping out
polio in Cameroon and moving the country towards an AIDS-free generation.
Other sectors
of Cameroonian society in which the diplomat said his government was working on
are peace and security, as well as trade and youth leadership. That brings the
total to four, including the health sector.
In the area of bilateral trade, the Chargé d`Affaires
stated “the U.S. embassy is proud to have facilitated a dramatic increase in
bilateral trade in the last three years. Last year, U.S. exports to Cameroon
more than doubled under President Obama`s National Export Initiative. And we
are very pleased to see the increasing number of Cameroonian exporters who are
now achieving success in the U.S. market”.
Concerning youth
leadership training, he stated: “Under President Obama`s Young African Leaders
Initiative, twelve young Cameroonians will travel to universities in America
this summer for a new fellowship program. In addition, the embassy will sponsor
more than 60 Cameroonians to the United States on short-term educational and
training opportunities. Besides the embassy sponsorship, we are delighted to
report that among African countries, Cameroon ranks fourth in terms of the
number of students it sends to private and public American universities.”
