A Korean agricultural
expert who introduced several species of maize in Cameroon some 38 years ago
has returned and donated over a ton of another breed to Bamenda III Council in
Mezam Division of the North West Region, The
Post newspaper has reported. The donation was made to farmers within the Bamenda
III Council area.
According to
the researcher who is Prof. Kim Soon, the new breed which is known as “honey
maize” will conveniently replace the current breed being used in Cameroon
because the latter has become too accustomed to Cameroonian soil. He said the
new breed was so sweet that it would attract foreign buyers and Cameroonians
would love it. Furthermore, it would boost Cameroon`s economy, the agronomist
said. He brought a total of one hundred and fifty species of the breed.
The donor
paid glowing tribute to the late Dr. Jacob Ayuk Takem who was Cameroon`s
leading specialist in maize breeding and production. The professor deeply
regretted the loss of the Cameroonian researcher while pointing out that Dr.
Ayuk Taken was not just once a student of his but one of the best.
On hand to
receive the august visitor was the Second Deputy Mayor of Bamenda III, Joseph
Koti and the two Fons of Bamenda III Sub Division: the Fon of Nkwen and the Fon
of Njah. Before leaving Bamenda, Prof. Kim Soon met with agriculture students at
the National Polytechnic Bamenda and paid SDF Chairman Ni John Fru Ndi a
courtesy call. Although Fru Ndi is widely known as a politicianA, he is also a
farmer.
