The death
has been reported of the President of the Cameroon National Communication
Council, Mgr. Joseph Befe Ateba. He is said to have died recently in South
Africa. Mgr. Befe Ateba was also bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Kribi. In
fact, President Paul Biya appointed him Head of the Communication Council
while he was already archbishop.
He will be
especially missed because he belonged to the new generation of young, dynamic
and charismatic generation of catholic clerics in Cameroon. He authored a book,
Yobo that met with considerable
success. What I admired most about him
when I first met him was his mastery of the English language, although he was a
Cameroonian of French–speaking expression. In fact, he was a popular mass
celebrant for the Anglophone community in Cameroon`s national capital, Yaounde,
when he was still there. When I asked him how he acquired this ease of self-expression
in English, he told me he lived in Ghana before.
However, he
also came under scathing criticism over the way in which as head of the
Communication Council he “tried” journalists found to have flouted journalism
ethics.
