THE STORY ON COL. HANS ANAGHO

THE STORY ON COL. HANS ANAGHO

I have just read the piece posted on the camnetwork discussion forum relating to the exploits of the retired Colonel Hans Anagho. The article which was posted by Martin Tumasang is entitled: “Who is April 6th Hero? Anagho: A Loyal Soldier without a Fatherland June 12, 2014 ». The 6th of April referred to is, of course, the date of the abortive coup d’état which a fraction of the Cameroonian army staged against President Paul Biya in 1984.

However, there is something I find worrisome in the article. It is the fact that it seems to doubt that the Colonel had (or still has) a fatherland. I would like to state here unequivocally that the colonel is a traditional ruler of repute. He is the Fon of Ngwo in Momo Division. Since Ngwo is somewhere and not hanging in space, the implication is that the Fon of Ngwo does have a fatherland.

As it turned out, Mr. Tumasang’s reflections on Col. Hans Anagho were limited to the Cameroonian sphere. But the Fon made his mark for years in Washington as Cameroon’s Military Attaché to the United States of America. Prior to that and even before coming back home to join the Cameroonian armed forces, he serviced in Nigeria under the Nigerian army. The distinguished British journalist of Nigerian origin, Chucks Iloegbunam, who has now returned to Nigeria and settled there published a book on Nigeria’s political and military history. In that book he devotes considerable space to the contribution Col. Hans Anagho made in Nigeria.
